Workshops

Learn to read wind and argue with it

Small classes at the workbench, six seats, tea included. The sewing machines are older than most of our customers and twice as reliable.

First Flight

Half day, Saturdays · $75

Paper, cane and glue. You leave with a Petrel you sewed yourself and the scars of one honest bamboo splinter.

Silk & Spar

Two Saturdays · $240

Build a Gullwing Six cell by cell alongside one of our sergeants of the sewing floor. Includes silk, spar stock and a Sunday test flight.

Tail-Making Intensive

One evening · $45

Pennants, streamers and spinners. Bring patience; we supply the sewing machines, the thread and the tea.

Young Flyers Club

Ages 8-14, monthly · $60

Wind reading, knots, safety and a lot of running downhill. Six sessions a year, jackets awarded at the third.

What a day here looks like

Ten o'clock: knots and the wind window, taught in the yard with a training kite that has forgiven ten thousand beginners. Twelve: lunch from the harbour bakery, eaten on the wall whatever the sky says. One o'clock: to the bench. Three: the point, with your own kite on the end of your own line. Four-thirty: tea, logbooks signed, wind logged for the wall chart.

Bring nothing. Wear something that survives grass. Everything else is on the bench.

Practicalities

Seats are held by email and confirmed the Thursday before. Full refund up to 48 hours; inside that, your seat transfers to anyone you send in your place. Under-16s fly with an adult on the wall, no exceptions, not even for the workshop leader's own children.
