Bespoke builds

Your kite, argued into existence

Commemoratives, festival commissions, kites shaped like the dog you miss. The bench takes six commissions a season and no more, whatever the caller says.

The commission, step by step

  1. Conversation. Forty minutes, in person or on the phone. What it is for, who it honours, how it should behave in the air.
  2. Two sketches. Drawn on the backs of invoices, as tradition demands. One sensible, one that gets you excited.
  3. Sample panel. The fabric and frame in miniature before the full spar is cut. Changes cost nothing here.
  4. The build. Four to eight weeks depending on queue and temperament. Photographs at every stage if you like.
  5. First flight. Yours to attend on the point, or we film it. The kite ships the week after it proves itself.

What commissions cost

Between $600 and $4,000. The variable is silk, not effort: paper builds sit low, festival-scale silk builds sit high. A third of the fee starts the queue; the balance is due at first flight.

Recent commissions

The Marlow Loom

2025 · 14 ft festival bird

A heron in grey silk for a textile mill's centenary. Flew once at dawn above the millpond, then entered their boardroom on permanent loan.

Wren, kept

2024 · desk-sized petrel

A small paper kite in a wren's colours, built for a family who lost theirs too soon. It hangs, not flies; they asked for that exactly.
