The Field

Falmer Point flying ground

Eleven grass acres between the cliff path and the road, open dawn to dusk, free to fly for anyone with string. Our yard gate opens onto it.

The ground itself

Mown fortnightly, never fenced inside. The east quarter is left long for the skylarks from March to July; fly the west side then and everyone is happier.

House rules

Lines down when the coastguard flag rises. Dogs on a lead at the launch line. Give the right of way to whoever's kite is lower; they are working harder.

Young Flyers Club

Ages 8-14 · monthly · $60

Six sessions a year, wind reading, knots and safety, jackets at the third session. Runs since 1994; several of the sewing floor came up through it.

The wall chart

Inside the shop door hangs a hand-ruled chart of every flying day this season: speed, direction, who flew what, and the occasional marginal note ("too much wind for the Serpent", "perfect", "D. again lost kite, again forgiven"). The chart is the shop's true diary; the journal is just its public face.
